The first time I ever heard the word blog was from the Disney show Dog with a Blog. At the time, I thought blogs were basically online diaries-or something only a talking dog would have. I definitely did not expect that years later I'd be writing my own. But after starting my own blog last week, I'm starting to see why blogging is still such a big part of social media marketing.
Before reading Chapter 12, I mostly thought of social media as short posts, quick videos, and endless scrolling. Blogs, podcasts, and webinars felt more intimidating and, honestly, easy to ignore. Once I actually tried blogging myself, however, it made much more sense. Blogs give people space to explain ideas, tell stories, and communicate clearly without worrying about fitting everything into a caption or a few seconds of video.
Writing blogs also made me realize how often I already read them. Any time I Google a question and click on an article that explains something clearly, it is usually a blog. Blogs don't feel rushed, and readers can read them at their own pace. As someone new to blogging, blogs feel more helpful than sales-focused.
Vlogs feel like the natural next step. They're essentially blogs in video form. Video content feels more personal because you can see facial expressions and hear their tone. Even if the topic isn't exciting, a vlog can make it more engaging just by showing the personality behind the content.
Podcasts are another format I'm starting to understand more. While I do not listen to them all the time, I get why so many people enjoy them. Podcasts allow listeners to multitask by listening while driving, walking to class, or doing chores. They usually feel like casual conversations instead of a formal presentation, which makes it easier to stay focused.
Webinars are still the format I'm least comfortable with. I always picture them as a long online lecture. But learning more about them showed me they're actually interactive. Participants can ask questions and engage with the presenter, which makes webinars more engaging than I expected, especially when the topic is something people actually care about.
After writing a couple blogs and learning more about these formats, I see why they matter. Not everything fits into a short post. Blogs, vlogs, podcasts, and webinars give creators room to explain ideas and connect in a more meaningful way. And honestly, I'm just getting started.
