D3 Lives Matter: A Weekend of Chaos, Competition, and Growth

If I'm being honest, this weekend felt like a perfect snapshot of everything that comes with being in season. It was exhausting, chaotic, stressful at times, but also incredibly fun and rewarding in ways that are hard to explain unless you're living it. Between hosting a full tournament, trying to stay on top of school, and then turning around to face the number one team in the country, it was one of those stretches where everything hits at once. And somehow, you just figure it out as you go.

Our weekend began on Thursday as we prepared to host an invitational tournament that included Hope College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wittenberg University, and Alma College. Preparation started before practice, where we cleaned out both dugouts to get the field ready. It was not glamorous, especially when we discovered a decapitated mouse in the visitors' dugout. While definitely not something you'd expect to deal with, it was just part of getting everything ready for the weekend.

On Friday, we competed in two games against Hope. Despite putting up a strong fight, both games ended in losses. Off the field, I faced another reality of balancing everything at once. I had to miss a class for the games, which meant rescheduling an exam. Seeing my grade temporarily drop nearly 20% when I checked Canvas was a stressful reminder of how quickly things can shift when you're trying to manage multiple responsibilities at the same time.

Saturday provided a much-needed rest. With no games scheduled, I was able to catch up on rest and spend time with my parents, something that does not happen often during the season. We watched various games throughout the day, including Michigan basketball and hockey, both of which ended in wins. Being able to see them, even for a short time, meant a lot and gave me a chance to step away and just relax.

Sunday brought us back to competition with two games scheduled at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., requiring an early 8 a.m. arrival. We came out strong in the first game and secured a win, which gave us a boost of confidence. During the break between games, we were surprisingly allowed to go out and eat with our parents, which is rare. Back to the field, we passed the time suddenly by debating who would survive the longest in a Hunger Games scenario. It was a fun, light moment that helped keep things loose before our final game. Although we ultimately lost to Witt, the energy and team dynamic throughout the day stood out more than the result.

The weekend's experiences carried into Tuesday, when we face Trine University, the number one team in the nation. Going into the matchup, expectations were low, but what followed was one of our most competitive performances of the season. In the first game, we fought hard and only lost 4-3. The energy in the dugout was unmatched, and for the first time, all season, it felt like everything was clicking. Our freshman pitcher, Sydney, delivered an incredible performance, keeping their hitters off balance and showing just how much potential we have as a team. While the second game resulted in a 10-1 loss, it did not take away from the progress we showed, and our coaches were genuinely pleased with how we competed.

Looking back, this weekend wasn't just about the scores or the record; it was about everything in between. It was about the early mornings, the stress of balancing school, the random dugout moments, and the rare chances to see family. It was about realizing that even when things do not go perfectly, you are still growing, still improving, and still finding joy in the game. That is what makes all of this worth it.
