More Than Just Streaks: Rethinking Snapchat
If someone asked me a few weeks ago what Snapchat was used for, I would have given a very simple answer: messaging friends and keeping streaks. I haven't considered the app beyond that. Snapchat was just something I opened out of habit to stay connected with people and save funny, memorable moments. After learning more about Snapchat in class, however, I started to realize that the app I casually use every day actually reflects much bigger ideas about communication, social media habits, and even marketing. What once felt like a simple messaging app now seems like a platform that is carefully designed to keep people engaged and connected.
One of the biggest things I realized is how natural Snapchat makes communication feel. Unlike other social media platforms, where posts are carefully planned and stay online forever, Snapchat feels more relaxed. The disappearing messages remove a lot of pressure about what you send. When I use Snapchat, I do not think about whether a picture is perfect or worth posting publicly. I just sent something quickly and moved on with my day. After thinking about this more, I realized that his design is probably why the platform feels so comfortable for college students. It creates a space where communication is quick, casual, and often more authentic than other platforms.
Another thing I started noticing after learning more about Snapchat is how often I actually open the app. I had never thought about it before, but Snapchat really does become part of your daily routine. You open it when you wake up, between classes, while studying, and before going to bed. These interactions are usually very short, but they happen constantly throughout the day. I used to think that Snapchat was just a messaging tool, but now I see that its design encourages people to keep coming back repeatedly. Even the fact that the app opens directly to the camera makes it easier to send something quickly without thinking too much about it.
Learning about Snapchat also made me realize that the platform is more influential than I originally thought. Before this lesson, I gave little thought to the marketing side of Snapchat. I mostly ignored ads or skipped through stories quickly. However, understanding how companies use Snapchat helped me see that businesses view the platform very differently from most users do. Companies recognize that people spend a lot of time on Snapchat and check it frequently, which makes it a valuable place to promote products or build brand awareness. Even though I still mostly use Snapchat to talk to friends, it was very interesting to realize that the same platform is also a major marketing space.
Another feature that I personally appreciate more now is Snapchat Memories. At first, I thought memories were just a convenient way to store photos, but I now see them as something that adds another layer to the platform. Snapchat allows users to send temporary content while still giving them the option to save important moments. For me, this means I can keep funny moments with friends, memories from events, or random pictures that I might want to look back on later. It creates a balance between living in the moment and preserving experiences.
Looking back at my original thought that Snapchat was only for streaks and quick messaging, I now realize that perspective was pretty limited. Snapchat still serves that purpose for me, but learning more about the platform helped me understand that it is designed very intentionally. The same features that make the app feel casual and fun are also what keep users engaged and make the platform valuable for businesses. Even though my daily use of Snapchat probably will not change much, I now see the app differently. What once seemed like a simple way to send pictures to friends is actually a platform that shaped how people communicate and interact online. In a way, Snapchat still feels like it is about streaks and quick messages, but now I understand that there is a lot more happening behind those snaps than I originally realized.

Hi Paige! This is an interesting perspective, and it made me think about my own habits on Snapchat. After the class lecture, I also had the realization of how much marketing and brands Snapchat has exposed me to. Additionally, as you said, I did not realize how frequently I opened the app- even if it is just for a couple of minutes.
