Navigating the Final Stretch of My First Year

Sitting on the bus during our three-hour trip back from a game, with mandatory study hours in progress, I found myself reflecting on everything that has happened this semester. As the school year comes to an end, everything seems to be accelerating at once. There is a sense of urgency surrounding both academics and athletics, and it feels like there is very little time left to accomplish everything that still matters. As a softball team, we are nearing the end of our season, and as a student, I am approaching the conclusion of my first year of college. It is a strange realization, especially considering how quickly the year has passed.

From an athletic standpoint, this season has been a learning experience. There was a strong sense of confidence and excitement at the beginning. As a young team, we believed we could exceed expectations and show what we were capable of. While the results have not always reflected that early energy, this season has challenged us to grow, adapt, and stay committed through adversity. At this point, we are sitting in eighth place in the conference, and while making the OAC tournament is becoming less likely, it does not take away from the effort and resilience shown throughout the season. With only two weeks remaining, the focus has shifted to finishing strong and continuing to build for the future.

Academically, this semester has also presented challenges. Missing approximately two days of class each week due to travel has made it difficult to stay consistent. As someone who learns best through in-person instruction, this has had a noticeable impact on my performance. Keeping up with assignments and preparing for exams has required more independent effort, and my grades have reflected that adjustment. With only a few weeks left in the semester, I find myself working to improve my academic standing as much as possible. One of my main motivations is to avoid required study tables next year, which would add additional strain to an already demanding schedule that includes long practices.

Despite these challenges, this semester has also been a period of growth. Being away from home has made certain situations more difficult, particularly when facing adversity without the immediate support of family. However, it has also created opportunities to become more independent and self-aware. I have learned the importance of managing time more effectively, staying disciplined, and recognizing the influence of the people I choose to surround myself with. Letting go of individuals who do not support or respect me has been an important lesson.

Reflecting on this experience, there is a balance between frustration and appreciation. While the outcomes may not align with initial expectations, the lessons gained throughout the semester are valuable. I have met people who have positively impacted my life, and I have grown in ways that extend beyond athletics and academics. Sitting on the bus after a long day provided a moment to pause and recognize that even a challenging semester can still be meaningful.

Overall, this period has reinforced the idea that progress is not always measured by results alone. Growth often comes from navigating challenges, adjusting expectations, and continuing to move forward with purpose.

  1. Hi Paige! Congrats on wrapping up your freshman year. I completely agree with everything feeling much faster-paced towards the end of the semester. As an athlete, I will say I feel like it does get a bit easier after the first year in terms of managing the routine- you start to gauge how professors respond to missing class and finding what hours work best for homework and studying. You are almost done; you got this!

  2. Hey Paige! It is crazy that freshman year is coming to an end. Like you said, it has gone by fast and now even faster as the end gets closer. It must be even more difficult missing classes at times to travel. Plus handling the intensity of your sport and school work all at the same time. Luckily it is almost over and summer is close. Have a great week!

  3. Hey Paige! Currently responding to this as we are waiting for our rain delay! I can't believe school and the season are almost over. It does suck that we keep missing the same classes, especially when we are here all day. I hope you have a good rest of your week!

  4. This is so important to recognize. As much as I think that our class requiring blogging is unnecessary, I really did love to hear about how your college experience shaped you. That is what it's all about after all. Thanks for sharing!
